Color, flavor, consistency – what’s “normal”?
Fun fact: No two hemp plants will ever be exactly the same!
That’s the beauty a crop like hemp that hasn’t ever been industrially produced – you get to experience the beautiful variety of a truly heirloom plant.
But let’s face facts: We’re all used to knowing exactly what to expect from our foods and supplements, at all times. And there’s nothing wrong with that!
Consistency in food sizes, colors, and tastes is a relatively new phenomenon.
Our grandparents and great-grandparents ate fruits and vegetables that looked and tasted quite a bit different from grocery store produce.
The good news is…
…hemp hasn’t been mass-produced in over a century.
But that’s why there are so many unsettled arguments about hemp vs. marijuana and strain vs. strain.
So what’s actually “normal” when it comes to hemp-based CBD? What should you reasonably expect?
Here are answers to the questions we get all the time:
Q: Is it normal for hemp CBD products to taste different from other hemp CBD products I’ve tried?
A: Yes. Consistency, color, and even flavor can be different from a previous product or batch. This is particularly pronounced in concentrates and drops, but sometimes capsules, vapes, and even topicals can look, feel, taste, and smell different.
Q: Does the variety of hemp mean CBD levels can change, too?
A: Yes. This is why reputable companies will “batch” their hemp oil to ensure it’s more homogenized and will contain the CBD content stated on their product packaging. (Keeping in mind that CBD levels will vary naturally, but should NEVER be off by more than 10% of what’s stated on the packaging.)
Q: If a product looks or tastes different, should I be concerned about quality?
A: Not necessarily. You can be sure that all of the products we retail are held to very high quality standards. You can view our certificates of analysis directly from third-party labs on our website.
Q: Why don’t hemp oils I buy at the grocery store have the same consistency issues?
A: This is mostly because those products are produced on a somewhat larger scale than hemp oils developed specifically for CBD. Even still, like all natural products, hemp products will have varying levels of key nutrients, might be lighter or darker, and may smell or taste a little different! The differences might not be as pronounced, but they are most definitely there!
